About Letterboxing

Letterboxing is a fun hobby combining art with "treasure-hunting"  Participants look for hidden letterboxes by following clues, and then recording their discovery in a personal journal with a a rubber stamp that's part of the letterbox. Latest Adventure in Letterboxing

My son and I have just begun to letterbox.  I was in search of something that would encourage him to enjoy hiking and all things to do with nature and accidently stumbled upon letterboxing.  We both have found it to be a great hobby and he is more than willing to go hiking these days.

Our last hunt was in Wekiwa Springs State park in Florida.  We found two wonderfull letterboxes.  The trails were very difficult however.  I believe that there has been a lot of burning and cutting down of trees in that park lately.  The trails were very sunny and hot.  I can honestly say that I hve never hiked a trail where I needed sunscreen before, so I went unprepared and got fried.  There were also several trails that intertwine making it very easy to take a wrong turn, which I am embarassed to say, we did.  I cannot say that I enjoyed this trail much.

I also would not reccomend taking smaller children on any of the longer trails due to the heat and lack of shade most of the way.  I later talked with regular visiters to the park and was told that a huge number of trees throughout the park had been cut down.  As to proove this we were awakened early on morning to the sound of park rangers using chainsaws to cut down several trees.  I have always believed that the purpose of state parks were to preserve nature and help educate the public to the importance of preserving nature.  I have to say, on this point I am very discouraged by what I saw at Wekiwa Springs State Park.

As far as our letterboxing experience was concerned, It was very good.  We found both the boxes planted there and had a great time in the process.  Of course I cant tell you where they are, but I will provide links to sites that can help you on your way.
